Greens urge more Council action over BAE Woodford closure.
The Green Party in East Cheshire and Stockport is concerned at the loss of 630 jobs as a result of the closure of BAE Systems in Woodford.
John Knight of East Cheshire Green Party said: "In these days of economic uncertainty, this will be a particularly worrying time for those workers and their families.
"We call on Cheshire East & Stockport councils to work together on sourcing funds, and enticing employers, for projects which utilise the skills of the workforce for the benefit of the environment and local communities. These schemes could include the development, manufacture and installation of renewable energy systems, home & business insulation or public & sustainable transport systems.
"As to the future development of the Woodford site itself, we welcome Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council's announcement (1) that they are 'working with BAE Systems to identify ways to attract future investment' to the site, and that 'work is underway to properly plan its future regeneration and development'. However, we are determined that the land and wildlife of the Green Belt must be protected.
"We would therefore be strongly opposed to the development of large-scale housing or retail projects, which would completely disrupt and drive away the curlews, lapwings, plovers, sandpipers, sandmartins, buzzards, herons, weasels, shrews, voles & moles that currently thrive on the site."
